  1. 1929-1968. US civil-rights campaigner, black
  2. leader, and Baptist minister. He first came
  3. to national attention as leader of the
  4. Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott 1955, and
  5. was one of the organizers of the massive
  6. (200,000 people) march on Washington DC 1963
  7. to demand racial equality. An advocate of
  8. nonviolence, he was awarded the Nobel Peace
  9. Prize 1964. He was assassinated in Memphis,
  10. Tennessee by James Earl Ray. King's birthday
  11. (15 Jan) is observed on the third Monday in
  12. Jan as a public holiday in the USA. Born in
  13. Atlanta, Georgia, son of a Baptist minister,
  14. King founded the Southern Christian
  15. Leadership Conference 1957. A brilliant and
  16. moving speaker, he was the symbol of, and
  17. leading figure in, the campaign for
  18. integration and equal rights in the late
  19. 1950s and early 1960s. In the mid-1960s his
  20. moderate approach was criticized by black
  21. militants. He was the target of intensive
  22. investigation by the federal authorities,
  23. especially the FBI under J Edgar Hoover. His
  24. personal life was scrutinized and criticized
  25. by those opposed to his policies. Always a
  26. target of segregationists and right-wing
  27. extremists, he was shot and killed in
  28. Memphis, Tennessee. James Earl Ray was
  29. convicted of the murder, but there is little
  30. evidence to suggest that he committed the
  31. crime. Various conspiracy theories concerning
  32. the FBI, the CIA, and the Mafia have been
  33. suggested.
